Ottawa Masters Ski Racing is recreational ski racing for everybody. Members are of all ages 19-81, all abilities Beginner to Expert, Never raced to World Cup Pro. The common link is love of skiing, love of racing, and love of the cold.
We race every Wednesday night at Ottawa local hills. Registration opens at 6:15 pm and closes at 7:00. Races start at 7:15 sharp.

The finals have been moved to Edelweiss.

The exec have been hard at work trying to save the finals after Cascade was unable to host us. The good news is that Edelweiss is willing and able host us this Saturday March 23 (a big thank you to Edelweiss and the race club).

Registration opens at 9AM above Customer Service (on the right as you are walking under the arch).

Two runs of GS followed by two runs of SL (followed by lunch).

The cost is $20 per race and $35 for a lift ticket.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there for the final race of the season.

Unfortunately, the ski gods didn't come through for us. Camp Fortune is unable to host us tomorrow (March 13).
We're still holding out hope for the Finals March 23 at Mont Cascades.

Don’t hold your breath but as mentioned after Wednesday’s race at Edelweiss, we are not ruling out having a race next Wednesday, March 13 at Camp Fortune. We just want to give you a head’s up as you may not have attended the last race. There will not be a definitive decision until early next week. In the meantime, we encourage you to make offerings to the ski gods so that they may grant us another race.

Ne retenez pas votre souffle mais comme mentionné après la course de mercredi à Edelweiss, nous n’excluons pas d’avoir une course mercredi prochain, le 13 mars, à Camp Fortune. Nous voulons juste vous avertir car vous n’avez peut-être pas assisté à la dernière course. Il n'y aura pas de décision définitive avant le début de la semaine prochaine. En attendant, nous vous encourageons à faire des offrandes aux dieux du ski afin qu'ils nous accordent une autre course.

Back on at Edelweiss

Who said skiing was a Winter sport?

Feels like it’s March 104th, the year that skipped Winter, we moved from Autumn then Spring.

Last race at Edelweiss was the biggest turnout since 2020 when under 18 racers are removed.

We will redo last time experience in the effort to attract the next generation of Masters racers; so once again the Edelweiss U16-18 athletes will also participate at the race. So come out and see if you can still ski faster than the Generation Z teens.

Race registration is $20.

Lift passes for racers will be $25.

This season, we also have a few initiatives to encourage newcomers to our series.

1) For one time only, we are waving the Race fees for first time newcomers to Ottawa Masters. So if you have an Edelweiss pass, you race for FREE. If you need a lift ticket, you can race FREE with a $25 discounted lift pass.

2) Student rates for this season:
2 for 1 on Race Fees for Students up to 25yr, so two students for $20.

You don’t need to be a former ski racer to race with us; we have a number of our current Master racers that have had never raced before joining us.

The only thing you need is skis, a helmet and the ability to ski.

So why don’t you join us and join the camaraderie and fun for a wonderful evening of ski racing!

De retour à Edelweiss

Bienvenue dans notre série du printemps.

Nous sommes de retour.

Qui a dit que le ski était un sport d'hiver ?

On dirait que nous sommes le 104 mars, l’année qui a sauté l’hiver, nous sommes passés de l’automne au printemps.

Super Mario a sa perceuse, ses portes et est prêt à s'installer. Rendez-vous sur Zoomer.

La dernière course à Edelweiss a été le plus grand taux de participation depuis 2020, les coureurs de moins de 18 ans ont été supprimés.

Nous refaire l'expérience de la dernière fois dans le but d'attirer la prochaine génération de coureurs Masters ; donc une fois de plus, les athlètes Edelweiss U16-18 participeront également à la course. Alors venez voir si vous pouvez encore skier plus vite que les adolescents de la génération Z.

L'inscription à la course coûte 20 $.

Les forfaits de remontées mécaniques pour les coureurs coûteront 25 $.

Cette saison, nous avons également quelques initiatives pour encourager les nouveaux venus dans nos séries.

1) Pour une fois seulement, nous annulons les frais de course pour les nouveaux arrivants au Ottawa Masters. Donc si vous possédez une passe Edelweiss, vous courez GRATUITEMENT. Si vous avez besoin d'un billet de remontée, vous pouvez courir GRATUITEMENT avec un forfait de remontée à prix réduit de 25 $.

2) Tarifs étudiants pour cette saison :
2 pour 1 sur les frais de course pour les étudiants jusqu'à 25 ans, donc deux étudiants pour 20 $.

Vous n’avez pas besoin d’être un ancien skieur pour courir avec nous ; nous avons un certain nombre de nos coureurs Master actuels qui n'ont jamais couru avant de nous rejoindre.

La seule chose dont vous avez besoin, ce sont des skis, un casque et la capacité de skier.

Alors pourquoi ne pas vous joindre à nous et rejoindre la camaraderie et le plaisir pour une merveilleuse soirée de ski de compétition !

First Race of the season at Edelweiss

Our regular season race move on to a new hill. Giant Slalom course set on Zoomer by Super Mario Gagnon, past Ottawa Masters multiple race winner.
Also in an effort to attract the next generation of Masters racers; some of the Edelweiss u16-18 athletes will also participate at the race. So come out and see if you can still ski faster than the Generation Z teens.

Cette semaine la Série des Maîtres se déplace à une nouvelle montagne. Vainqueur de plusieurs courses des Maîtres, Super Mario Gagnon va monté un superbe slalom géant sur la piste Zoomer.

Giant Slalom at Cascades

Three race down, five to go until the Finales.

We were 34 racers last Wednesday Stubby slalom at Vorlage; the biggest Wednesday night post-pandemic turnout.

This will be the last race at Cascades before we head back for our Finales.

Registration starts at the World Cup Lodge at 6:30pm, not the main side of the mountain. The first tiny lodge and parking lot to match when you drive to Mont Cascades.

Ladies Night!!!

The 17th annual Ladies Nights Stubby Slalom at Vorlage is this Wednesday.
A tradition that started in other to attract more Women to Masters ski racing.
This season we extended this deal to Students and waived the race fees for first time newcomers to the Ottawa Masters.
Everything to encourage more skiers to race with us.

Race fees:
2 for 1 for Woman (2 for $20)*.
2 for 1 for Students up to 25yr (2 for $20)*.
First time? Free racing.
*only one deal at a time.

If you don’t have a Vorlage pass, racers pay $25 for lift pass at Race registration in the Bar.

Stubbies courses are also a great way to attract recreational skiers that have never race in a slalom course before which might find full gates intimidating.

Une tradition qui a commencé afin d’attirer plus de femmes à participer aux courses des Maîtres. Afin d’attirer plus de skieurs à nos courses, nous avons décidé de l’offrir également pour les étudiants et les nouveaux des Maîtres d’Ottawa.

We had 24 racers for the first race of the season at Vorlage last Wednesday; despite the Freezing rain and a few of our regulars still not back from the World Masters in Italy. How many will show up this week? Races at Cascades have always been my favorites. One beautiful run, one lift and one lodge basically to our selves.

Happy New Year Ottawa Masters,
Our season opening is almost here, unfortunately we'll have to wait a little longer. Although Cold weather has finally arrived and snowmakers are working overtime, Camp Fortune won't be able to get the Slalom run ready for our first scheduled race on this Wednesday, January 10th. We are hoping to reschedule the Camp Fortune GS on a later Wednesday in the season. The next schedule race is a Giant Slalom at Vorlage on January 24. We are skipping one Wednesday while a few of our racers are off to the World Masters in the Italian Alps. Good luck in Italy. Stay tuned to the next newsletter prior to our first race in just over two weeks.

Bonne année les Maîtres,
Notre première course de la saison est à nos portes, malheureusement nous allons devoir attendre un peu plus longtemps. Malgré le fait que les canons fonctionnent continuellement depuis le début de la semaine, les centres de ski sont en retard dans leur enneigement et Camp Fortune ne pourra pas nous accueillir mercredi prochain, le 10 janvier. Nous espèrons pouvoir rescheduler cette course plus tard en saison. Notre prochaine course à l'horaire sera le 24 janvier pour un slalom géant à Vorlage. Nous sautons un mercredi pendant que certains de nos coureurs iront compétitionner aux World Masters en Italie. Bonne chance en Italie. Restez à l'affût pour le prochain envoi d'ici notre prochaine course dans deux semaines.

The executive has been hard at work putting together the schedule for the 2024 season.
We are hoping to offer an eight race regular season plus finals.
We still have a few details left to confirm. Below is what we have so far.

It is time!!!

The Ottawa Masters are back.

The snow is in the air.

Ski hills are making snow.

Tremblant is getting Flying Mile ready for the first World Cup race in Eastern Canada in 30 years.

That means the Kunstadt Open House / Buy Night is coming on Tuesday Night November 21st, 6pm-9pm at 680 Bank St. in the Glebe.

We are working on the definite 2024 Ottawa Masters Race Calendar. In accordance to the various challenges experienced by hills operators, ski clubs and us, our season’s race schedule will feature 8 races on Wednesdays, a Slalom and Giant Slalom at each of the 4 Gatineau Hills areas. First race being the traditional first GS at Fortune on Wednesday January 10th and culminating with the Finals with 2 races on a mid-March Saturday (to be determined).

This season, we will also be skipping one week in January when a number of us will be racing the Winter World Masters Games in Italy.

The pandemic definitely brought its share of challenges over many aspects of skiing over the past few seasons; fortunately the strength and dedication of the local hill operators and our membership allowed us to reboot the longest ski masters series in Canada. Our season started slow, but it got better as we got our racing legs back.

In the past year, we lost an important part of our executive, Rob, Dominique and Gary, our president, after over 20 years of service to the Masters. Of course, the Masters and ski community also lost our previous president, founder and big supporter Kim Fripp. Kim will be missed, but he will be remembered, and we are committed into continuing his work towards recreational ski racing in the Ottawa Valley.

Step 1 was to get new blood and new perspective on the executive. In order to keep our Series viable, Step 2 is to renew our membership, increase our turnout and get new skiers hooked on Ottawa Masters Racing. We are working on a few initiatives to attract new racers. New volunteers and members are always welcome.

Ça sent la neige!!!

Les centres de ski ont commencé à fabriquer de la neige. Tremblant se prépare à tenir les premières Coupe du Monde dans l’Est canadien en 30 ans.

La série des Maîtres d’Ottawa est également de retour.

La soirée Portes Ouvertes / Achat Kunstadt sera mardi soir le 21 novembre, 19h-21h, au 680, rue Bank dans le Glebe.

Présentement, nous mettons les dernières touches au calendrier pour la saison 2024. Avec les nombreux défis subits par les centres de ski, club de compétitions et notre organisation, nous avons planifié une saison de 8 courses les mercredis soirs; un slalom et un géant à chaque montagne. Notre première course aura lieu le mercredi 10 janvier et culminera avec une Finale de 2 courses un samedi de la mi-mars (endroit et date encore à déterminer).

Nous avons également décidé de sauter une semaine en janvier pendant que certains d’entre nous serons en Italie pour participer au Winter World Masters Games.

La pandémie nous a apporté de nombreux défis; l’engagement et l’enthousiasme des stations de ski et de nos membres nous ont permis de redémarrer la plus longue série des Maîtres au Canada. Notre saison a commencé timidement, mais s’est améliorée après quelques courses sous nos skis.

Nous avons perdu une importante partie de notre exécutif lors de la dernière saison; Rob, Dominique et Gary, notre président et membre de l’exécutif pour plus d’une vingtaine d’années. La communauté du ski, ainsi que toute la région a également perdu son ancien-président et co-fondateur et supporteur des Maîtres Kim Fripp. Kim va nous manquer, mais il restera dans nos souvenirs, et nous nous engageons à poursuivre son œuvre vis-à-vis des courses de ski récréatives dans la vallée de l’Outaouais.

La première étape était d’attirer du sang neuf et des gens ayant une nouvelle perspective sur notre exécutif. Afin de nous assurer une série des Maîtres plus viable, la deuxième étape consiste à renouveler notre membership, d’augmenter la participation à nos courses et d’attirer de nouveau coureurs. Nous travaillons présentement sur quelques initiatives pour attirer de nouveau coureurs. De nouveaux bénévoles et membres sont toujours les bienvenus.

Comme toujours, les Portes ouvertes sont une occasion de :

Venir voir de vieux amis et d’en rencontrer de nouveaux;

Obtenir de l’information;

Partager un verre et une bouchée;

Profiter des aubaines des Maîtres et de faire votre magasinage de Noël;

S’inscrire pour la saison.

  • updating the weeb site, this thing you are reading right here, right now
  • attending the yearly executive meeting.

Executive Retirements

As your president, I have been involved in the running and organizing the masters for pretty close to 25 years.
My time has come and I figure the end of the pandemic is a good enough time to pass on the torch to the next generation.
This will be my last year as your President. It has been my pleasure to serve you. I look forward to just going out and racing!

Yes our unflappable registrar is also taking her leave after this season. She plans on spending next winter someplace warm.
Dom has been the backbone of the masters for 20 years. Without her, there would be no masters. Please take the time to thank her this year at the counter for all the years of service she put in.








Jan 4, 2022 season cancelled until further notice

Sad to announce that all events have been cancelled until further notice. We are not yet calling off the whole season, we are just putting it on ice and remaining optimistic.

We are hoping that the pandemic cases and restrictions will be lifted soon and we will be able to bring you some racing in the future.

Thankyou to those that registered for the season, you will be receiving a refund.

We are working with the hills to bring you a 2022 race season. This year the schedule is fluid. As rules and situations evolve so shall the schedule. Nobody knows how the pandemic will go and how things will change as a result.
Please stay in tune.

Covid Rules

The sanitary measures announced by Public Health must be respected at all times. It is possible these measures may change during the season. All season�s pass holders and lift ticket holders agree to respect the measures in effect at the time of their visit.
A vaccination passport and official proof of identity is required for those 13 years of age and older to access the lodge. Clients who do not reside in Quebec must present proof of identity with photo and address outside of Quebec, as well as proof of official vaccination provided by their Province or Country. For full details, please visit quebec.ca.
When in the lodge, you must wear a mask and follow social distancing unless seated and eating/drinking.
No bags are allowed to be stored in the lodge. We will be encouraging skiers to arrive ready dressed and return bags to the vehicles.
Apres-ski will be on and the bar will be open. There will be no presentations as there will be no microphone and yelling moistly is frowned upon.
Camp Fortune: Tickets will be rack price, they are not discounting this season. I encourage you all to book your Lift tickets on line ahead of time. Last year they often sold out. There is no change to the other resorts.

COVID19 status

I have been in contact with Cascades and this is what they wrote:
"We are monitoring closely with the ASSQ and so far the Quebec Ski Areas are excluded from the mandatory
closing of large public gatherings in Quebec.
If the situation changes we will advise all concern.
Thanks

The hill is currently open they will advise if that changes.
Our position is, if the hills are open and willing to host, then we are racing!
So far that is how it is looking, the race has not been cancelled.

We ask that all racers respect the new norms:
  • Social Distancing -- stay 1 meter apart,
  • Bump elbows
  • Wash your hands
  • Sneeze into your armpit
  • Don't touch your face
  • Wash your hands.
  • Dont share Nachos (wait,.. what?)

This years event will be one to remember. Of course everybody is welcome, we just give preferential treatment to the ladies. Bring your favorite girlfriend out, favorite partner, and go racing.
We have been working at stoking the prize table so this is not a race you want to miss. We will have a suite of special prizes from our long time sponsor Kunstadt sports just for the Ladies. As a special treat, this year Telus has stepped up and is donating some prizes as well. Ladies golf shirt, beer mugs and they have put the grand prize on the table: An iPhone 7.
You read that correctly, folks, up for grabs is an iPhone7. Wow. We will have a suite of prize just for the ladies only but Every body who registers and races will be eligible for the grand prize.

Forecast for Wednesday is few flurries, High -9, low -15. Things have never looked better for a fantastic season opener.

The 24h Tremblant Race

This year the Ottawa Masters Team raised $3780 for the benefit of children and the Sens Foundation.
The race is a total blast and if you haven't been, make it a date for next year.
We rented two 1 bedroom condos across the hall from each other. There was not much sleeping going on, what with the all night partaying and people stomping in and out of the room at all hours of the night in ski boots.
The racing was excellent. Picture this: The racer pulls into the pit and the crew get to work. They strip off the bib and pull it onto you and the tracker guy peels the transmitter off the boot and puts it on yours. With a pat on back you are off running to the gondola, down a slippery snow steps and in all the while beating your competitors off. Then its a 11 min gondola ride to the top. When the doors open, you bolt. Grab your skis and run for the depart zone. Skis on ground, step in - don't miss and then skate like a mad man as far as you can. And it's straight down Beauvallon, past the TGV straing onto Bier-en-Bas, under the Flying Mile, S turns on Roy Scott and back to the Gondola. And A-aaa No Tucking! My ski tracker had me pegged at 90 Km/h. At night. In the fog. Yeaaa Haw.








Nov 05 2013 - The New Season!

Schedule

Just to give you all an update, we are working on the schedule and have a draft ready to go. We are just looking to confirm a few dates and we are good to go! This year January 1 falls on Wednesday. That's about as late as it can get. It effectively pushes our race schedule out one week. The first race is on the 8th the last on the 22nd of March.
We have a few changes on the schedule this year just to make things interesting.
This year we are planning the great Ottawa Camp Fortune race weekend: the masters on Saturday Mar 22... the Pro Race on Sunday. Get the word out to all your out of towner friends, this is gonna be exciting! When you're riding the lift that weekend, you can use the whole chair, but you'll only need the edge!
Are They Making Snow?
Soon, grasshopper, soon. Forecast is for a snowier than average winter. It's going to be a most excellent season and with the current cold spat it could be an early season too! Flurries are happening. I scraped the frost from my windshield this morning.

This is an incredible event and tons of fun. Partys, Live Bands, and 24 hrs of Non - Stop Ski Racing. If you are interested in joining us in the par-tay, let us know There is room for you!

2013 Dave Gowan Award:
This years award winner is an individual who has been with the masters organization for a few years now and is a stalwart member of the new skool gang - the group of young, fast, die hard skiers, out to make us grey hair bifocal wearing fuddies wish we were in the bar. He attended 10 out of 12 races. He was one of 4 racers who improved his beer points handicap in both disciplines. His sense of humor and Masters spirit was set when he raced in a Green Morph Suit at Cascades.
The deal clincher was set when he flew home on the Red Eye from Cuba landing at 5AM so that he could attend the finals. Leaving someplace warm, to race in the Finals? Now that's dedication to the craft! And that's why this years winner is:

This just in! We have added a new race to the sched: Mon March 11 SL at Camp Fortune.
This is a make up for the lost race of Feb 27. But why Monday?
Well fellow masters, we promote Monday night training in conjunction with CF. Monday night training ended on the 4th, and all those Monday nighters are looking for more of the same, so we decided to take advantage of that and bring some of the Monday Nighters into the game.

Jan 1 2013: The First SnowFell

And what a snowfell it was

What an amazing start to the season. I am still digging out my driveway.
I hope you people had a most excellent Christmas holiday and are all ready to get down to the business of Ski Racing!

The First Race goes Tommorow - Wednesday Jan 2 at Camp Fortune.
Here all all the Deets, my Peeps:
  1. The race is a GS.
  2. The hill is Slalom.
  3. It would be a bad idea to get them mixed up.
  4. Registration is in the Bar Area in the Valley Lodge.

First Night registration will open early. Please arrive early.
Normally registration opens at 6:15 pm and closes at 7:15. Races start at 7:30 sharp.

First Night registration is always busy. Things will go much faster if you have everything preset. Bring correct change. Have your cheques prewritten, Have your applications filled in and ready to go.

Ottawa Masters Association Club Membership Fee: $25 (Does not include race entry fees and lift tickets.)
For the race entry fees, you have two options -
Option1 Seasons Pass: entry for all 14 Races: $135 (a savings of $75) -OR-
Option2 Pay as you play: Single Race entry fee available on race day: $15.00

NOTE: the current forecast calls for -22C wednesday night. If it does indeed turn out to be frigid, then we will invoke the nefarious Speed Suit Rule. From the web:

When the ambient temperature at the time of registration drops below -20 C, the use of speed suits shall be banned. Dress warmly.

The 24h race at Tremblant

The Ottawa Masters had an amazing team entry into the 24hr race at Mont Tremblant.
The club raised a total of $ 3235.01
I am not sure where the .01 came from, but I guess every penny counts!

We placed 20th in our division of 215 teams so that is an outstanding result. Could have been better except I broke my binding when I stepped on it to get ready for the gondola. That mishap cost us 15 minutes but we managed to get back on track with an amazing night of catch up by Benoit and Roger.

Remembering Ted Puttick.

"I've received some terrible news from Jonathan Puttick. Jonathan was a regular on the Masters circuit until he got a knee injury 2 years ago. His parents, Ted and Gail were also regular on Wednesday nights until about 5 years ago. I skied with Ted on Friday at Edelweiss, he was in great spirits and he always loved going out skiing regardless of the weather or conditions. He will be missed.

My deepest condolences to the entire Puttick family on behalf of the Ottawa Masters."

And then the email programs wouldn't let me mail out more than 50 members on a TO: list so I broke it down into multiple groups and did multiple send outs. Phew. That was a lot of work. Now, she be all automated.
I primed the list with the membership list I had. From now on, it'll be up to you fellow racers.

This year the Masters is entering a Team! We are looking for 10 members to participate on the First Ever Ottawa Masters team.
Here's the deets, peeps: A Team entry is $1300. The club is coughing up $800 towards the team entry. Each member will be responsible for a $50 portion of the entry fee, Plus, each member must commit to raising $300 in donations towards the cost. Plus Accoms.

Once we have 10 people committed to the cause, we will create the team on the Tremblant website and book accomodations. We need a minimum of 10 to get this event going so don't be shy, come on out!

Finals Notes Pay Attention! Important Stuff!

The good news: Race is ON!
The bad news: It ain't gonna be pretty!
The weather has been great. If you like mush. I don't have to tell you it's been a challenging week, all you need to do is look out the window. We have been talking daily with Cascades and they are committed to pulling off the finals for us tomorrow. They will be pushing snow around from the competition side on to the exhibition side to ensure we have a track.

Fertilizer

We will be buying fertilizer to firm up the snow.
You must not ski, slip, slide or even think about about skiing the course, while the fertilizer is setting up. You must inspect the course from outside the lane.

Safety

Safety is our primary goal. We are committed to bringing you a safe and fair race. Everybody must inspect! There is no shame in quitting. Ruts will form, so if you feel that it is too deep or knarly for you, take a pass and meet us in the bar.

John Irving is the TD. Members of the executive will be on Race Committee. Jamie is course setter.

Aside from the 17 degree forecast this weekend, Cascades thinks that we will be able to run on Ex. Their plan is to push snow from the competition side. We will follow up with them on Friday.

The Season Thus Far

We have been really lucky. The races have been most excellent. Not too cold. good conditions.
The Race results for the season have been very tight. On the Ladies, Allison has run away with every race she entered - however, despite her wins, her attendance has hurt her top line. The Bronze is clinched, but can she improve? Will she take home all the bragging rights? She has to be there! Kathleen is in solid second. Carmen is holding third. With three races left to go, the title is on the table and up for grabs. It's going to come down to the last race.

The Mens race is stunningly close. Ron opened strong but faded in the last couple races earning only a single point on his bailout effort at Cascade. Lucky for him, the yungun Gary Jones suffered the same fate. Gary has been charging hard throwing down impressive times and it's paid off. A late start is being made up for with consistant podium times. So far, though, it's all about Benoit. He took the lead from Ron early and has been holding on to it vigorously - like a pit bull on a rubber ball.

The real race is in the Beer Points.
Chris Zuliani has taken over the lead, the result of putting up consistent numbers and full attendance. 100% attendance coupled with 100% never-say-die-persistence leads to gold and the coveted Beer Mug Trophy. It's all about attendance folks. Aaron Porter and Chris Evans knows all about that also. Also with full attendance, they are breathing fire. It's still too early to get a prediction, but this is true: The beer point winner will need to attend all three remaining races AND ski much better than average.

The Last Wednesday Night Race

The last of the last Wednesday Night races goes this Wednesday at Edelweiss.
Its' a Slalom.
This is your last chance in 2012 to get out and race. With the time change, it'll be very cool starting in the whats-left-of-the-daylight instead of just pitch black.
It'll be warm. but not warm enough for speedos. Actually, I don't think it's ever warm enough for speedos, so lets not go there. Lets just not.

Thurs Mar 29 7:00PM -Finals Partay!

This is it boys and girls, the year end finals partay goes on Thursday Mar 29 at the beautiful Britannia Yacht Club. There will be Munchies, trophies, and nonsense.
Brittania is a cash free zone, so don't forget your credit/debit cards. If you do, Just hang around John or Ron and look wistful.

The awards ceremony will be significant.
Who wins the Beers Points?
Who are the two top skiers who can hold their heads higher than the rest?
Who will take home La Gran Prix: The Dave Gowing Award?

Amazing Race at Edelweiss

What an amazing race at Edelweiss. For those that missed the race because you thought it might be bad weather missed the most excellent race of the season. About -2C, light wind. We had three full runs with the course getting faster each run. Gary Jones, skiing with the 100 bib threw down the fastest run of the night on the 3rd run. The big 4 were in mortal battle for the Mens win. You should have seen them mentally calculating who was ahead of who trying to figure the winner. In the end young brawn succeeded wiley age for the gold.
Never let the weather dictate!

Back on track

After swapping the two races: Race 2: GS at Edelweiss with Race 4: SL at Fortune, we are back on the original schedule track. Back to Cascades Feb 8 for our second visit this season.

Ladies Night

Ladies night is approaching! We have lots of great prizes for the ladies! Really good prizes! Too good to let them all out now. But I'll give you hint: BleuSpa. SO, get your girlfriends, lady friends, and come on out and have a great race at Vorlage!

Next Wednesday's race is going to be a SL at Mont Cascades

A few had questions about the schedule for this year. We did a couple switcheroonies to accommodate the resorts lane availability. We switched the Jan 11 Edelwiess Race to Camp Fortune and the Jan 25 race from Camp Fortune to Edelweiss. So there. That's it. There will be a Make-Up race on Thurs Jan 26 at Camp Fortune.

Good Job Camp Fortune on Race #1

We had 60 racers for the opening night. Awesome turnout. It was a bit cool and windy but nobody lost a nose or a foot to frostbite so it was all good. The Mens two timing champion, Ron was in fine form winning again. Everybody else is out training like a maniac and there's Ron on the bunny skiing with Olivia. He show up, not having been on GS skis all season, and mops the floor with everyone. I don't know he does it, but I knows he does it.Relative newbie Justin Tsang showed his strength as a candidate taking silver and the permanent bridesmaid Bob elbowed Benoit off the podium and took home bronze.
Our mustache winning Jeff Skene was 3rd in the Beer points/ Mark Peacock silver. The Beer lessons from Camille paid off because Sarah Pearson landed on the podium and took home the best run.
The night belonged to the Pelletiers. Pierre posted a respectable 13th but got chicked by his own daughter Allison, who at 49.66, landed in 8th place overall. Nice Race. Joelle Pelletier won silver and Stephanie Junkin bronze.

There were lots of new faces out and I extend a warm welcome on behalf of the Ottawa Masters.

Buses will depart at 8 a.m. from Kunstadt Sports Glebe location at 680 Bank Street for Camp Fortune on Saturday January 7 and 21, February 4 and 18 and March 3; to Mont Ste. Marie on Saturday January 14 and 28 and February 11 and 25. Special week night trips to Camp Fortune will depart from Kunstadt Sports Glebe location at 680 Bank Street at 6 p.m. on Thursday January 26, February 9 and 16.

We have a new Facebook presence. The facebook group we have will be discontinued and we will begin using a facebook page. The prime motivation for this was the new group format prevents anyone who is not a fb user from seeing it. I know, I know, I can't believe it either, but there are some people in the world not on fb. Also, pages gives us a lot more flexiblity on the usage. For example, you can get updates by SMS, and if you've seen our web lately, you will notice that the fb content is now streamed to the front page. That would over there. <----<<<< To the left. Yay.

The Movember Results

Thanks to all the keen heavy-lipped Movember participants who stepped forward last night, kudos to all for committing and contributing to such a worthy cause. I witnessed many a conversation, giggles, gasps, etc. in response to your various "creations" :-). After careful deliberation, special congratulations go out to Steve Skorenky, Eric Brouillard, and Jeffrey Skene who took home the grand prize of a one-year membership with the Ottawa Masters, for winning top honours in our Movember contest.

You may recall my attempt at procuring the mo last year. This year I am throwing down the gauntlet. I will follow in the foot steps and join the ranks of famous mo-growers, Tom Select, Lenny McDonald, and Rick Hunter. I will dust the cookie before I eat it. I will grow the Mo! And now you can too! That's right! This year the Ottawa Masters exec is extending the Snowember challenge to all members. Patrick, a seasoned veteran at growing the mo -and everything else in between-, is our team captain and he has created the Ottawa Masters Grow Your Own Mo team on the Canada Movember weeb site, right here:

To ski the Ontarios and the Quebecs, you need to be a National Member or be an Ontario Regional member. Race notices can be found on-line at www.acamasters.com

What a great Edelweiss GS. We had a record 52 racers for an amazing night of racing.
We managed 4 runs, to count as two distinct races. To make up for the missed timing in the last Edelweiss race. Beautiful weather and lots and lots of fun!

Anne Heggtveit won the Olympic slalom gold medal at the Squaw Valley Olympics in 1960 � by 3.3 seconds!
Come celebrate the Olympic Spirit and 50-th Anniversary of Canada's first Winter Olympic Gold Medal won by Anne Heggtveit in Squaw Valley. Anne, an Ottawa-born Alpine skier trained at Camp Fortune where a run is named after her. The 50th anniversary of her win is on February 26, 2010.
Tickets are $50 each. Proceeds will support ski racing in the National Capital Division. There will be food and a "Weekend at the Westin" to be won as the door prize. Tickets are available On-line at http://www.campfortuneskiclub.org/celebrategold
The fundraiser (tickets $50) is not only to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Olympic gold medal in skiing won by a Canadian, but also to raise funds for NCD racers.

Hello all: With many of our regulars working at Whistler we could really use your help in supporting the next generation of elite FIS athletes. I encourage you to consider this great opportunity to support ski racing in the National Capital Region. The National Capital Division of Alpine Ontario will be hosting again this year two major Junior / FIS level race series at Camp Fortune.
  • Anne Heggtveitt Cup / Miele FIS Slaloms Feb. 27 & 28
  • 5th edition of the GMC Cup Slaloms, March 5 & 6.

These two race series are the most elite level races the Region will host this year and will be attending by the best FIS racers in eastern Canada and many for the US. As many of you are aware it takes more than 100 volunteers to host the races and we need your support.
Please sign up early by contacting Alan Sainsbury [mailto:sains@magma.ca] and get the best chance at getting the volunteer position of your dreams!! Although we cannot guarantee what job you may be assigned it is always better to be first in-line!!!! Please pass the word if I have missed anyone in this email.

Overall World Cup BEER Points to Date **NEW**

I just can't leave well enough alone! Check out the NEW overall BEER points World Cup standings.
All points are updated to include the Cascade race... It's a close one Ladies and Gents!
The Leader Board shows the Beer points race to be heating up. It's a real pressure cooker!
Kurt Sjolund (194), Torsten (186), Kevin Forneris (155)

The Cascades GS tightened up the overall race for third. Paul Kondrat is skiing amazingly this year and tenaciously held on to his third place position despite huge gains made by Benoit and Martin with their 1st and 2nd place finishes.
Bod Sudermann, despite missing the past two races, is still holding onto his second place. Another DNS though and he'll be watching the medal presentations.
Ron pulled in a disappointing 7th, but participation is the name of the game here folks, and those 36 points are 36X better than a stay home and watch the TV. He has taken an almost unsurpasable lead in the Mens race.

On the Ladies board, Brigit Laberge is all but running away with the Gold. It appears to be a race for second, as Johanne, Carolyn, Daria Kark, and Laura Robson are dukeing it out like snowboarders in a boarder cross. Renee is showing amazing grit, and posting great results, but attendance is proving to be a challenge for her.
However with 7 more races to go though, it's stil anyones race and nobody, NooooBody can afford to get too cocky!

Overall World Cup Points to Date **NEW**

Check out the NEW overall point standings.
I built a spread sheet that totals the overall series standings to date and posted it on the results page. At the top. This spread sheet calculates overall points using the current World Cup points system: 100 points for 1st place down to 1 point for 30th place. ( 100 80 60 50 45 40 36 32 29 26 24 22 20 18 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 )
The Race to the 2010 championship trophy and all the bragging rights that go with it is on. At 100 points for a win and 0 points for a no show, participation is a significant contribution to the total score.

The Leader Board shows a series that is anyones to win:

Race 5 GS Edelweiss

44 racers -3C start, -8 finish. Some flurries and blowing snow. The drive was uneventful. The hwy 5 extension sure is nice. The lift ride was positively balmy.
We are getting the best of the best this year. We have not even had to consider the No Skin Suit rule. My bar of ultra cold go-fast wax has not even been out its plastic baggie. No Rain, no postponements, no cancellations. Noisce. The race #5 synopsis was captured poetically by Renee on Facebook, so I'll just use the rare cut n paste method of bringing her prose to you rather than duplicating effort:

My first GS of the season - thankfully I remembered all the right gear. It was snowing pretty hard at the start of the night but cleared up nicely for race time. People were having a good laugh at the mysterious second delay and I didn't meet anyone who was confident ...that they skied it right (as in left :-) ). I think the timing is not in the right order because I'm certain my third run was my fastest, I'm working on being quicker edge to edge. The temperature dropped something fierce after 8:30, was glad that pull down didn't take long. Missed quite a few of the regulars tonight but it was nice to meet some new faces too.

Olympics

Members of the Ottawa Masters are involved in all aspects of skiing.
Past Pres Kim Fripp is heading to Vancouver to chair the Ski Jumping events and past executive member Chris Moore is chief of the skier cross. These guys aren't painting crosswalks on the snow, they are the Big Dogs. Wish them the best.

Race 4 SL Camp Fortune

45 racers
Another great time! Fortune runs a tight ship with the race set, starter in position, a coral, all set and ready to roll for 7:00. Too bad we weren't. We're only slow getting to start gate. After the deluge we had on Monday I was worried the hill would be bad, but it survived and was in great shape. The falling temperature ensured a firm base without it being bullet proof. We all got in three runs and the 3rd was pretty good. It held very well.
Frank Bernier showed the old dog still has some bone by giving us a really good set. It was a challenging course and I really had to work it. I heard nothing but nods.
Bob stepped up on the podium again taking a second gold of the season. Ron continued in his footsteps with a silver. The bronze was nailed by Vern

The executive met in secret and decided to go all out and raise the beer points award to $10! Unbelievable how crazy we are. Who else gives you this kind of ski racing? Nooooo Body. Special congrats goes to Kurt Sjolund who pulled an amazing 31:37, beating himself by an incredible 125%. He even beat me. I want his wax. Or his Red Bull.

As I write this, it's minus 15 out and the wind is blowing the dog off the chain. We've been so lucky with the weather this year. The race was sandwiched between Tuesdays mush and Thursdays arctic monkeys. Race night Temp: -4, Vis, Crystal clear (again) with little breeze. Driving conditions: Excellent, driving time to hill: 38 minutes.

Race 3 SL Cascade in review

A field of 47 racers!
What a great time! Possibly one of the best races ever. The temperature was perfect, The snow conditions outstanding. And the course? Well, I would have to say it may have one of the bet sets ever. I don't know how Troy done it, but I knows he done it. When everybody was commenting about the outstanding set, and what a great course it was, you know something is right. Thanks Troy, good job.
It was a long slalom, with racers posting 45 sec +. A great turnout. We had so many racers that for the first time in a long time we did not have enough time to run a third. Nobody was disappointed though. We got our moneys worth.
Bob stepped up on the podium taking gold for the first time this year. Ron continued his winning ways with a silver, and I think, a first time podium finish for the Fastest Ski Patroller, Andy Mason with a bronze.
For the ladies, Brigit Laberge, a new member topped the list. Stephanie Mandal silver and bronze for her first outing of the season, the lovely Renee Lefrancois.
Special mention to Eric Brouillard who placed 8th, a top ten finish and a nice haul in the lodge after. An Atta Boy goes to Pete Kunstadt who beat me by 1/100 of a sec. How did he do that?

Temp: started at -3, dropped to -8. Crystal clear with a slight breeze on top.

Race 2 GS Edelweiss in review

Yeah! The 2010 season is shaping up to be a banner season for the Ottawa Masters. Another field of 50 racers.
The drive up was fine despite the drizzly freezing rain. The new hwy 5 extension makes Dominique really happy and speeds up the drive significantly. My attitude has always been, if you plan on going skiing, go. Don't bail because the weather is looking iffy. Last night was no exception as the skies cleared, the wind dropped and temp raised to a balmy -4.
Ron Kunstadt Crushed the competition yet again! The Kneissel White Star he is running will be inspected and measured by the jury. Two races in and he's already looking like the 2010 skiers champion. Can he keep up his attendance? Will next weeks SL be good for him? Is there no one that can challenge his mastership? Treasurer Bruce McKay knucked down and turned on the jets but came up short and had to settle for second place. Reigning Champion Benoit Bernier was thanked for coming out.
the race started on time. Even Andy Mason was on the grid for first run. The 2010 season is a never ending source of amazement for me. With amazing weather and snow conditions. It was a great atmosphere at the start, skiers prepping skiis, stretching and rivals making the last bets on who beats who.

After all the planning the first race is upon us. For the first time in years, we have excellent weather and excellent snow conditions. Some tips to help the first night go smoothly:
  • Get there early. (ie before 6:00)
  • bring cash. (we will accept cheques )
  • Lift Tickets must always be displayed: on your goggles strap or Seasons Pass inside your suit

First Race: Wed Jan 6 at Camp Fortune

The First Race of the Season is only 2 weeks away. First Race day is always busy with registrations so I suggest you come early (ie before 6:00), print out a copy of the registration and bring it with you.

With a slow start to the season it is really nice to see the cold weather come in and give everybody an opportunity to blow snow. I've managed only one day this year. It seems that everybody on Facebook is getting more days than me. Skiing in Whistler and Kicking Horse and Farnham Glacier and Chile and Hawaii. The nerve of them having such a good time.

Race Updates!

The last couple of races have been Great. The SL at Fortune wed night was very good. Troy set a very good course. The snow was very good. The temperature was very good. The starter was very good. Yep, it was a very good race!
The forecast for the next 4 weeks calls for more very good weather. It's staying light later, the weather is getting warmer, and the courses are going to be the best ever.

Ladies Night Wed Mar 11 Stubby Slalom!

Our annual Ladies Night stubby SL is postponed to wednesday Mar 11 !
We polled the ladies about the format race of the Annual Ladies Night. The results were unanimous; they preferred the Stubby SL over the GS format. The executive just replied "yes dears. What ever you say."

On Wed Feb 18 At Cascade GS, Paul Kondrat recorded his first ever Masters Win. Paul beat out masters podium regulars Benoit and Francios. Paul has been training regularly with Troy and he just keeps getting faster and faster. Next year we're going to make him President. That'll slow him down!

Start Order and Other Things!

Couple reminders. Masters always go in order. Yeah I know it's hard to get in numerical order, especially when people arrive late, however... Our timers have been complaining because it is difficult for them to keep track of who goes when. So, lets give the old guys and the starters a break and try to arrive on time (Andy Mason exempted) and try to get in a reasonable order.
Bibs. every year we seem to loose a bib or two. If you happen to find a bib at home, in your bag, on your rec room wall, or mixed in with the lost socks, just drop on the bib pile. The Masters Thankee.
Skiing the course. Inspection is required and slide slipping is nice. Taunting your fellow racer during the inspection is mandatory. But skiing the course is frowned upon. If you see someone skiing the course, just take him aside and beat the crap out of him.

Canadian Ski Museum!

Ontario Champs Feb 28 Blue Mountain

Those of you that are planning on racing the CDN nationals can book accoms at Donato House Hotel is only a 15 minute drive away in Wasaga Beach and boasts an indoor salt water pool and hot tub.

Camp Fortune Cancellation

Sorry about the cancellation of the First Race. Camp Fortune decided that with the high snow fall that it would be safer to cancel. I would have loved to run the race but, oh well, the decision was made for me. I got the call about 2:00 pm. I had to do some rushing around to get the notice out.
I posted the news on the Facebook and send out emails. My email list at work was out of date so I apologize to those that didn't get the message.
Stats from our web server showed most of the web hits were around noon. Before you head out on a race day I would encourage you all to do a quick check before you Frap La Rue.
That said, for those of you who made the trek, I heard you an incredible night of skiing, so all was not lost. I'd rather be skiing boot top deep powder than racing anyway.

Welcome to the newd year

Happy Newd Year Fellow Racers, the newd season is just about upon us and snow is good and skiing is great and the resorts are pretty much up in full operation. Forecast for Wednesday is light snow, High -4, low -8. Things have never looked better for a fantastic season opener.
Things are always busy on opening night, so plan to get there early! Ticket window opens at 6:00. We will have forms for you or print them out. Bring Correct Change! If you have preregistered, you will have bibs assigned. Look for the posters.

Change of Venue - Finals

We wanted to bring you the finals at Calabogie, but that is not going to happen this year. Sorry! We are rescheduling the finals to Cascades. They did such an incredible job last year, we are only too happy to go back there.
I haven't given up on Bogie, I will talk with them throughout the year and see what we can do for next year. I would be very happy to bring you a kick-the-ass top to bottom GS run.

Bibs Volunteer

1. If you have bibs. Bring them back. Please!
2. We need a volunteer to take care of the bibs. Rob Poudrette did a great job of handling the bibs, but after 2 years it is time to pass the torch. The job is simple. It's really just a 2 step process: Bring the Bibs. On time.
The On Time part is important.

Delegating the Curse...

So Fellow Racers, I am happy to be delegating the 2 second Curse of the president to Bruce McKay for Races #2,3,4.
I will be traveling to Tanzania Africa on a medical mission Jan 12 - 29 with CACHA to provide support and services to Aids and Women's shelter in Moshi Tanzania. I will be climbing Kilimanjaro as part of a fund raiser for the shelter and African Aids patients. While Kili is covered with a bountiful cone of snow, alas, skiing is prohibited. And I won't have room for a helmet, so I definetly won't be able to ski. I'll try and post some pics and comments on our facebook site so keep in touch there.
Any messages WRT to Race changes will be posted on the Facebook Site.
Just treat Bruce the same way y'all treat me and things will be fine.

The Awards party

The finals awards party was a great success. Brittania is such a nice club, it's great that John can arrange for us to go there.

Anyways, A great time may have been had all, but I can't answer for all. Maybe somebody had a miserable time. I don't know. I had a great time. The Habs won, so all the Sens fans stampeding off the wagon had a great time too, I am sure. Judging by the people in the room, I can with some confidence that a Relatively OK time appeared to have been had by the majority of folks in attendance.

The Dave Gowing Award

A lot of people asked me, how do we determine the winner of the Dave Gowing award? The truth is, it's a closely guarded secret. We don't even know! The award is for the most improved skier, but really it's more than that. It's most improved, and the skier of the year and the best participation, and the nicest guy, and the most helpful, all rolled into one. This is the highest award in the club.
  • We start with the complete member list.
  • Participation is an important factor. We run two disciplines, so we remove anybody who has not skied in at least 4 races per discipline. This weeds out the slackers.
  • We look at the improvements in the penalty factor generated by the beer points program, comparing last year to this year. To ensure consistent results, we remove anybody was not a member last year. Slackers get slower.
  • It is easier for a newbie to increase the beer factor than a pro, so to ensure a fairer comparison, we apply a logarithmic normalization factor. Bruce is really good at that.
  • We look for improvement in both disciplines. Slackers may improve in one, but both? Never.
  • Dedication to the sport and the craft is important too. So we look around. Is the participant tuning his skis, training on the weekend, traveling to outside races? Slackers don't train.
  • Because the Prez gets slower, we automatically exclude him. And he's a slacker by default, so he's an easy out.
  • By the time we get to the bottom of the list, we have usually excluded everybody, so ultimately we end up giving it to whom ever the hell we choose!

This years winner goes to a racer who not only podiumed a number of times, but he also beat Francois. He trains regularly at Fortune, works out, tunes his skis. He spent many evenings sitting on the panel of the NCD representing Ottawa Masters. Plus he's a nice guy to boot. Ladies and Gentlemen, this years Dave Gowing award goes to: Bruce McKay!

New Award -Beer Points Trophy!

I am pleased to announce that Paul Kondrat is the immortalized winner of the first overall Beer Points. Paul wasn't present to accept his award, so I accepted it on his behalf. Great Skiing Paul!

BiBs

We are still missing some bibs, please check your bags. If you have a bib in your bag, please bring it back! Bibs are very costly to replace, so... Please do you club a favour and bring it back.

The Final Word

A few nice folk approached me and said that they really enjoyed the news letters and for I say thanks. It's always great to have feedback. However, they would add, (don't it seem like there's always a however?) The newsletters didn't seem as funny this year.
It's been a very busy season for me. I have a new girlfriend , so that alone should be reason enough. We're Newlyfriends if you know what I mean. But that's not all folks. I'm working on a CD project. Yeah, I'm a singer songwriter. I'm, to use industry palaver, what they call Up and Coming. Which translated means, you haven't heard of him. The disk is due out sometime this summer. Most likely I'll end up with a basement full of CDs and my friends running for cover whenever they see me coming. Or the Master Prize table will end up full of CD's. It'll probably turn out to be the musical prize equivalent of the helmet bag. The demos are on myspace if you care to have a listen:

Well folks, friends and neighbors, fellow skiers, the time has come to put this season to rest. It's been great. Probably one of the finest seasons we've had for snow, good weather and good fun. Race Cancellation - Weather

Race will be cancelled if, at 15h00 on the day of the race, Environment Canada posts an ambient temperature of -28C either at the www.weatheroffice.com web site, or at the 998.3439 info-line. It is the responsibility of the racer to check these sources on race day - Gary might not always be able to post a cancellation notice on the web site by 15h00.
